Honoring a Distinguished Educator

Mr. Wedgworth was born on March 23, 1914, in Grimes County to Mr. and Mrs. Walter Wedgeworth. He graduated from Ennis Public School and went on to earn both his Bachelor of Science and Master of Education degrees from Prairie View University. He pursued additional studies at Texas Woman’s University in Denton, Texas. In 1959, Mr. Wedgworth married Alphonicia Donovan, who also served as a teacher in the Waxahachie Independent School District. Together, they had one son, Emmit B. Wedgeworth, Jr.
Mr. Wedgworth began his teaching career in the Falls Community of Ellis County. After serving in the military during 1942 and 1943, he resumed his profession in education, holding the position of principal in Fairfield, Texas, from 1944 to 1947. He subsequently served at Sealy Independent School District from 1949 to 1953. He later relocated to Waxahachie, where he was principal of Oak Lawn Elementary School. Over the course of seventeen years, Mr. Wedgworth contributed to the Waxahachie Independent School District, first as principal and later as attendance officer, before retiring from his distinguished career.
Beyond his professional commitments, Mr. Wedgworth was an active member of Joshua Chapel A.M.E. Church, serving as secretary on the trustees’ board. He also volunteered as Scoutmaster for the Boy Scouts of America and was a member of the Senior Citizens Board of Directors. His civic involvement included membership in the Kiwanis Club, American Legion, Waxahachie Chamber of Commerce, Retired Teachers’ Association, and Disabled American Veterans Association. In 1976, he was honored with the Outstanding Citizens Award by the Citizens for Progress Organization.
Mr. Wedgworth was widely esteemed in Waxahachie for his exemplary leadership and dedication as an administrator within the Waxahachie Independent School District. E. B. Wedgeworth Elementary School, named in his honor, stands as a lasting tribute to his commitment and service to the students of Waxahachie.
